Resident Louise Clark Honored - Received National Award

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging Announces
2007 MetLife Foundation Older Volunteers Enrich America Award Recipients
Louise Clark of Edmonds, WA, HONORED

Recognition and Celebration was held June 11 @ 11:00 a.m. @ Alder crest Health and Rehabilitation 21400 72 nd Avenue W. Edmonds, WA 98020. Louise Clark of Edmonds, WA, has been chosen for a MetLife Foundation Older Volunteers Enrich America Award by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) Ms. Clark is one of 28 award recipient nationwide. Administered by n4a, the national program celebrates outstanding older volunteers and their contributions to their communities. Ms. Clark received a Team Spirit Award for her leadership work with the Resident Councils of Washington (RCW). Louise Clark, President of the RCW Board of Directors, is the fearless leader of the Resident Councils of Washington. Louise serves as a role model to other persons who live in long-term care facilities. She believes that despite living with chronic disabilities in a nursing home she still has a strong mind and a lot to contribute. Louise shares her passion for self-advocacy with other Board members and guides them in building a strong consumer based not-profit agency. Ms. Clark strives to educate her peers; to reach out to her legislators to seek improvements to the long-term care system and has represented long-term care residents at national conferences. Louise writes of her experiences as a nursing home resident in the Resident Councils of Washington Quarterly Newsletter: “We come from all walks of life, social and economic classes, religious and political beliefs. Yet we share certain factors in common. We all lived through experiences that should have put us down for the count, but didn’t. Somehow we found the inner strength not only to survive but to LIVE. In that process of surviving and living, we developed a better knowledge of who we are, so our understanding of and compassion for our fellow residents grew, and in expressing this we found ourselves in the resident council and RCW.”

The 28 award recipients, nominated by organizations and programs nationwide, will be honored during a ceremony on June 8, in Washington, D.C. Thanks to the generosity of the Extendicare Corporation, Louise traveled to Washington D.C. to receive her award. Ms. Clark received an engraved gift celebrating her achievement, and Resident Councils of Washington will receive a monetary award to further its work.
