The interest in learning and education does not stop with a disability or an age.  RCW recognized the need for continuing education for residents and takes its directive from the resident whether in nursing home or assisted living. RCW provides opportunities for residents to plan, develop, facilitate and educate others as well as recruiting facilitators and presenters to educate.

  How?

Resident In-service training (for and by residents) on resident council development, resident presentations on the benefits of involvement and participation in RCW Partners in Progress conferences, are designed and unique to communities.

Conferences are planned by steering committees consisting of: residents, ombudsmen, activity directors, social workers, marketing directors, managers, administrators and family members of local communities.
These conferences are unique to each county. The agenda usual includes resource sharing, maybe a keynote speaker, 2- 3 breakout sessions or discussion groups, followed by a wrap up, lunch and entertainment.
RCW Directors visit regions to share the benefits of resident involvement with the Resident Councils of Washington.

  RCW Education for the Professional

RCW target activity directors and social service personnel when designing workshops and course work. Workshops are catered to specific needs of activity directors ranging in topics from activity program design, to activities for the dementia resident, disease understanding, alternative therapies such as pet therapy, horticulture therapy, laughter, exercise, sensory stimulation and more.

RCW is the sponsor/provider in Washington for the Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals. The Mepap is designed to prepare the entry-level participant to meet certain standards to effectively work with residents in activities as well as prepare them to be certified through the national organization, National Certification Council for Activity Professionals.

RCW sponsors a two-day Social Service Course each year covering the basic knowledge needed to be an effective social services director.  It is designed for the beginning social service director and as a review for more seasoned social service directors and assistants. To register for the MEPAP course or social service course go to our resident council store.
